Sector Marino is a 43 square km section of Eastern Pacific  tropical marginal reef ecosystems, incorporated into Área de Conservacíon Guanacaste.

Sector Marino is home to a marginal reef system that experiences seasonal upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich and more acidic water as trade winds push warmer surface waters offshore. Survival of such dramatic changes, particularly in temperature, is unusual for most tropical reef-building corals.

That corals exist in Sector Marino all, many thriving, make this system particularly interesting to study coral health and survival.
